Día Mundial del Libro: Un día lleno de libros, sueños y esperanza 📘🌟👧🏽

At EFTC, we have a dream: to provide the next generation with access to quality education. We believe that education doesn’t just change lives. It also transforms entire communities. To make this possible, we need to ensure that essential tools and materials are available for our students. And one of the most powerful tools of all is books.

Unfortunately, in Guatemala, books remain a luxury for many families. During our Christmas campaign, many children shared that, sadly, they have very few books at home, so few they can count them on one hand.

Despite these challenges, our students understand the importance of books and how access to them can open the door to a world full of opportunities. That’s why, at the School of Hope, we are committed to promoting reading and encouraging the use of books as a gateway to knowledge. We firmly believe that books have superpowers: they can transport us to new places, develop our imagination, and connect us with people and cultures completely different from our own.

En EFTC tenemos un sueño: ofrecer a las nuevas generaciones acceso a una educación de calidad. Sabemos que la educación no solo cambia vidas, sino que transforma comunidades enteras. Para esto, necesitamos contar con las herramientas y materiales esenciales al alcance de nuestros alumnos. Y una de las más poderosas son los libros.

Lamentablemente, en Guatemala, los libros continúan siendo un lujo para muchas familias. Durante nuestra campana navideña, muchos niños compartieron que, en casa, tristemente, cuenta con muy pocos libros. En la mayoría de los casos, tan pocos que pueden contarlos con una sola mano.

A pesar de estas dificultades, ellos reconocen la importancia de los libros y cómo tener acceso a ellos le abre las puertas a un mundo lleno de oportunidades.

Por eso, en la Escuela La Esperanza, queremos fomentar la lectura e incentivar el uso de libros como herramientas para adquirir nuevos conocimientos. Creemos firmemente que los libros tienen superpoderes: son capaces de transportarnos a nuevos lugares, desarrollamos nuestra imaginación y conectarnos con personas y culturas completamente diferentes a las nuestras.

Our children never give up in the face of difficulties. They keep dreaming of learning more and strive every day to keep exploring this wonderful world of reading. That is why, on the 23rd of April, we gathered to celebrate World Book Day with a very special assembly in our school. It was a day filled with joy, imagination and discovery ,especially for our little Prepas. The morning began with the raising of the flag and the singing of the national anthem of Guatemala. This assembly was organised by the 4th grade students. A group of children were in charge of leading the whole ceremony. At the beginning, they were a bit nervous, but as the minutes passed, their confidence grew. Teachers, students and volunteers listened attentively to classic stories such as Little Red Riding Hood and the Three Little Pigs.

Nuestros niños no se rinden frente a las dificultades. Ellos siguen soñando con aprender más y se esfuerzan día a día por seguir explorando este maravilloso mundo de la lectura. Por ellos el 23 de abril, nos reunimos a la celebración del Día Mundial del Libro con una asamblea muy especial en nuestra escuela. Fue un día lleno de alegría, imaginación y descubrimiento sobre todo para nuestros pequeños Prepas. La mañana empezó con el izaje de la bandera y la entonación del himno nacional de Guatemala. Esta asamblea fue organizada por los alumnos de 4to de primaria. Un grupo de niños se encargaron de dirigir toda la ceremonia. Al inicio un poco nerviosos, pero poco a poco ganaron confianza. Profesores, alumnos y voluntarios escucharon historias clásicas como la Caperucita Roja y los Tres Cerditos.  

Then, two school sections came forward to sing, but they didn’t do it in just any way. Each student held a book in their hands, turning the performance into an even more meaningful experience.. We also enjoyed a creative acrostic that spelled out Día Del Libro which means Book Day. Each letter was presented by a student, who shared a thoughtful and inspiring phrase about the power of reading.

Luego, dos secciones escolares pasaron al frente para cantar, pero no lo hicieron de cualquier manera, convirtieron ese momento en algo aun más especial con un libro en sus manos. Además tuvimos un acróstico que formaba la frase Día Del Libro. Cada letra fue presentada por un niño, quien compartía una frase significativa e inspiradora relacionada con el poder de la lectura.  

The highlight? One of the most anticipated moments was the speech by Ancheli Morales, one of our sixth-grade students. She shared her experience of writing a book and how winning the contest was a very special achievement for her. Ancheli also gave heartfelt recognition to Lester Maxaná, one of her classmates, who supported her by illustrating her book Desastre en la Playa which means Disaster at the Beach.

Una de las actividades más esperada, fue el discurso de Ancheli Morales, una de nuestras alumnas de sexto de primaria. Ella conto su experiencia sobre redactar un libro y como ganar este concurso fue muy lindo para ella. También reconoció el apoyo que tuvo por Lester Maxaná uno de sus compañeros que la apoyo con las ilustraciones del libro Desastre en la playa.

Finally, to close the event, a very special raffle was held. You can imagine what the prizes were... Books, of course. We had 3 winners in Prepa, 3 in Primaria and 3 in Básico, these prizes were not random. They were given to the students who had shown the most enthusiasm and commitment to reading.

Finalmente, para cerrar el evento se realizó un sorteo muy especial. Se pueden imaginar cuales eran los premios… Libros, por supuesto. Tuvimos 3 ganadores en Prepa, 3 en Primaria y 3 en Básico, Estos premios no fueron al azar. Fueron entregados a los alumnos que habían demostrado mas entusiasmo y compromise con la lectura.
