Health and Wellness
Health and wellness are a key part of how we care for the whole child and help each student build a future beyond the cycle of poverty. Many of our students face learning and physical challenges, and we work closely with them to provide the support they need to move forward.
The care and support we offer
-

Physical Health
Our school nurse, Celena, an EFTC graduate, plays a vital role in keeping students healthy, safe, and supported. Last year alone, she responded to more than 1,000 student health needs, providing both immediate care and long-term support.
Celena helps identify and address challenges such as malnutrition, chronic health conditions, domestic abuse, substance use, and eating disorders. She supports students with ongoing medical needs by providing access to essential medications, coordinating referrals, and helping families navigate appointments, lab work, and treatment plans.
In addition to daily care in the nurse’s office, all students receive regular health screenings, including dental, vision, hearing, growth monitoring, and deworming. Preventative health initiatives such as vaccinations, personal hygiene education, sexual health education, and violence prevention workshops help students build lifelong healthy habits and stay well both inside and outside the classroom.
-
Healthy Relationships
Our Life Skills & Personal Development curriculum helps students develop the skills, confidence, and knowledge they need to succeed both in and beyond the classroom.
The program is designed to help students understand that the choices they make today can have a lasting impact on their future opportunities, relationships, education, and well-being. Through age-appropriate lessons, students develop self-confidence, learn to set meaningful goals, make informed decisions, and build the skills needed to navigate healthy relationships with respect and responsibility.
Through practical life skills, open discussion, and a supportive learning environment, students are encouraged to think critically, ask questions, and make informed decisions about their health, relationships, and future. Our goal is to help every young person recognize their potential, take ownership of their future, and build a strong foundation for a healthy and fulfilling life.
-
Mental Health
Our mental health program supports students' emotional well-being through counseling, therapy, support groups, and family services. Many of our students have experienced challenges such as neglect, abuse, grief, or exposure to violence, and we provide a safe space for healing and growth. More than 50 students currently receive ongoing psychological support.
Our clinical psychologist, Susana, provides individual and group support, leads preventative education on topics such as bullying and self-care, and works closely with families facing complex social and legal challenges.
Through workshops, family support, and partnerships with local organizations, we help students and families build the skills, resilience, and support systems needed to thrive.

Special Education
We are committed to ensuring every student has the support they need to succeed. More than 55 students receive academic support services, and over 20 students have been approved for curricular adjustments through the Ministry of Education.
Our Special Education Coordinator, Adriana, works closely with students, families, and teachers to identify learning needs, develop individualized support plans, and provide classroom-based strategies that help students succeed within their daily learning environment.
Our speech therapist, Mylin, an EFTC graduate, leads small-group speech, language, and sensory development sessions for students who need additional support. Through early intervention, teacher training, and family support, we help students build the skills and confidence needed to reach their full potential.
