Next summer it will be 20 years since the Education For The Children was formed and we started working with the people of Jocotenango. In the beginning our aim was, and still is to this day, to support the children of Jocotenango in defining successful futures for themselves.

Over the years hundreds of supporters and EFTC staff from across Europe, the USA and Guatemala have created hope, expectation and success where, before, there was none. From the poverty-stricken hillsides of Jocotenango, have emerged fully educated young men and women who are graduating and holding down professional careers with salaries and benefits instead of defeated and exploited manual workers.

El próximo verano se cumplirán 20 años desde que se formó Education For The Children y comenzamos a trabajar con la comunidad de Jocotenango. Al principio, nuestro objetivo era, y sigue siendo hasta el día de hoy, apoyar a los niños de Jocotenango para que puedan definir futuros exitosos para sí mismos.

A lo largo de los años, cientos de colaboradores y miembros del equipo de EFTC de Europa, Estados Unidos y Guatemala han creado esperanza, expectativas y éxito donde antes no existía nada. De las laderas empobrecidas de Jocotenango han surgido jóvenes que han logrado completar su educación, hombres y mujeres que hoy se gradúan y ocupan carreras profesionales con salarios y beneficios, en lugar de convertirse en trabajadores manuales explotados y sin oportunidades.

At the end of this week, in preparation for next year’s 20th celebrations, we will meet up with nearly 100 alumni who are the living proof of the success of our foundation. However, there is a cloud that currently blights our opportunity for continuing success.

During 2022, we have watched a series of world and domestic events unfold one after another with a combination of fear, bewilderment and dread. The Ukraine war and its resulting energy crisis, spiralling food prices and all of the consequences on inflation and the global cost of living. Here in the UK , a chaotic political landscape has influenced a huge drop in the value of sterling.

The consequences of this combination of events for EFTC are dramatic. Inflation is at 10%. Sterling value against the dollar and Quetzal is down 16% from last year. Even if we raise the same in 2023 as we have in 2022, there are no inflation increases and we must cut services by £84,000.

I am appealing to supporters, old and new to get in touch with me personally, david@eftc.org.uk, if there is anyone or any organisation that would be willing to talk to us about funding any of the shortfalls – whether it be a few hundred pounds or a few thousand.

Together, we have been through so much in the last 19 years. Our faith, confidence and drive are unbreakable. We must succeed and we will. We know the ending is not yet written but we hope that our network will once again prove itself strong and step up for the students of Guatemala.

Al final de esta semana, y en preparación para las celebraciones de nuestros 20 años el próximo año, nos reuniremos con casi 100 exalumnos que son la prueba viviente del éxito de nuestra fundación. Sin embargo, hay una sombra que actualmente amenaza nuestra oportunidad de continuar con este éxito.

Durante 2022 hemos visto cómo una serie de acontecimientos mundiales y locales se han desarrollado uno tras otro, con una mezcla de temor, desconcierto y preocupación. La guerra en Ucrania y la crisis energética resultante, el aumento descontrolado de los precios de los alimentos y todas las consecuencias sobre la inflación y el costo de vida global. Aquí en el Reino Unido, un panorama político caótico ha influido en una fuerte caída del valor de la libra esterlina.

Las consecuencias de esta combinación de eventos para EFTC son dramáticas. La inflación está en 10%. El valor de la libra frente al dólar y el quetzal ha caído un 16% desde el año pasado. Incluso si recaudamos lo mismo en 2023 que en 2022, sin aumentos por inflación, tendremos que recortar servicios por £84,000.

Hago un llamado a nuestros colaboradores, antiguos y nuevos, para que se pongan en contacto conmigo personalmente, a david@eftc.org.uk, si conocen a alguna persona u organización que esté dispuesta a conversar con nosotros sobre cómo financiar parte de este déficit, ya sea unos cientos de libras o unos miles.

Juntos hemos pasado por tanto en los últimos 19 años. Nuestra fe, confianza y determinación son inquebrantables. Debemos tener éxito, y lo tendremos. Sabemos que el final aún no está escrito, pero esperamos que nuestra red una vez más demuestre su fortaleza y dé un paso adelante por los estudiantes de Guatemala.
