Escuela De Verano Del 2022
There’s a different feeling at the school in the month of November. Escuela de Vacaciones started on October 24 and ended November 23. Since this was outside of the regular school year, the set up at the School of Hope looked different. Our students were divided into teams, each with a flag and an assigned team captain (one of the teachers). The teams had students from different class sections and grades, giving everyone the opportunity to make new friends. The captains escorted their teams to different stations throughout the day. The stations ranged from traditional math, reading and technology classes to more extracurricular activities like cooking, football and theater.
This year’s goals for Escuela de Vacaciones were to support students in academic areas such as math and reading while giving them opportunities to enjoy new experiences and gain new motivations. This was especially important this year after two years of at home learning.
En la escuela se siente un ambiente diferente durante el mes de noviembre. La Escuela de Vacaciones comenzó el 24 de octubre y finalizó el 23 de noviembre. Como esto ocurrió fuera del ciclo escolar regular, la dinámica en la Escuela de la Esperanza se veía distinta. Nuestros estudiantes fueron divididos en equipos, cada uno con una bandera y un capitán asignado (uno de los maestros). Los equipos incluían estudiantes de diferentes secciones y grados, lo que les dio a todos la oportunidad de hacer nuevos amigos. Los capitanes acompañaban a sus equipos a distintas estaciones a lo largo del día. Las estaciones iban desde clases tradicionales de matemáticas, lectura y tecnología, hasta actividades extracurriculares como cocina, fútbol y teatro.
Los objetivos de este año para la Escuela de Vacaciones fueron apoyar a los estudiantes en áreas académicas como matemáticas y lectura, mientras se les brindaban oportunidades para disfrutar nuevas experiencias y encontrar nuevas motivaciones. Esto fue especialmente importante este año, después de dos años de aprendizaje desde casa.
Throughout the month we worked hard with our students to raise their reading and math levels and have seen big improvements. The team captains were pleasantly surprised to witness our students learn new ways to destress and discover new passions. We were surprised at how many students enjoyed the cooking class and now have a new hobby to pursue. Not so surprising, the team captains saw the motivation sports had on our students. For some the main reason they attended classes were for the opportunity to play football and basketball. The second to last day of Escuela de Vacaciones honored that drive in our students and was a Sports Day!
The school transition for the last week and a half of programming, ending a little differently than it started. The students stayed in their teams but the stations focussed on holiday activities. Throughout the school you heard many different songs, some from the zumba class, Christmas carols, the making of musical instruments and the background music for performances.
A lo largo del mes trabajamos arduamente con nuestros estudiantes para elevar sus niveles de lectura y matemáticas, y hemos visto grandes mejoras. Los capitanes de equipo se sorprendieron gratamente al ver a nuestros estudiantes aprender nuevas formas de desestresarse y descubrir nuevas pasiones. Nos sorprendió cuántos estudiantes disfrutaron la clase de cocina y ahora tienen un nuevo pasatiempo que seguir. No tan sorprendente, los capitanes de equipo vieron la motivación que los deportes generaban en nuestros estudiantes. Para algunos, la razón principal por la que asistían a clases era la oportunidad de jugar fútbol y baloncesto. El penúltimo día de la Escuela de Vacaciones honró ese impulso en nuestros estudiantes y fue un Día Deportivo.
La dinámica escolar cambió durante la última semana y media del programa, terminando de una manera un poco diferente a como comenzó. Los estudiantes permanecieron en sus equipos, pero las estaciones se enfocaron en actividades navideñas. En toda la escuela se escuchaban muchas canciones diferentes: algunas de la clase de zumba, villancicos, la creación de instrumentos musicales y la música de fondo para las presentaciones.
The last day of our Escuela de Vacaciones was a day of presentations! All the students showcased the crafts they had been working on, the new skills they learned, the carols they loved and the choreography they came up with for this final showcase of the year.
This school year was especially tough but also one of the most exciting. Each time a COVID restriction was lifted you could feel the whole school exhale with relief and in the same breathe become giddy with excitement. We were able to finally have our students back in person, even if it was only half days and half the classes to start. Then July brought us back to full days at school! And finally in October we were able to take off our masks. With each change our team adapted to give our students the best educational experience possible.
This year also showcased the damage that COVID caused our students. Each grade took longer to adjust back to school and all test scores were lower than our average normal. Again, our staff saw the challenges and adjusted to meet the needs of our students. Which is one of the many reasons this year's Escuela de Vacaciones was so very important to our students.
Escuela de Vacaciones is a place to do more creative learning strategies, giving our students a space to learn while also experimenting with different ideas and topics. As the program comes to a close for the year, we reflect back on 2022. We could have never done any of these impactful strategies with our students without the support of our EFTC family. El último día de nuestra Escuela de Vacaciones fue un día de presentaciones. Todos los estudiantes mostraron las manualidades en las que habían estado trabajando, las nuevas habilidades que aprendieron, los villancicos que les encantaron y la coreografía que prepararon para esta presentación final del año.
Este año escolar fue especialmente difícil, pero también uno de los más emocionantes. Cada vez que se levantaba una restricción por COVID, se podía sentir cómo toda la escuela exhalaba con alivio y, al mismo tiempo, se llenaba de emoción. Finalmente pudimos tener a nuestros estudiantes de regreso en persona, aunque al principio solo fueran medias jornadas y la mitad de las clases. Luego, en julio, volvimos a días completos en la escuela. Y finalmente, en octubre, pudimos quitarnos las mascarillas. Con cada cambio, nuestro equipo se adaptó para brindar a los estudiantes la mejor experiencia educativa posible.
Este año también evidenció el daño que el COVID causó en nuestros estudiantes. Cada grado tardó más en readaptarse a la escuela y todos los puntajes de las pruebas fueron más bajos que nuestro promedio habitual. Una vez más, nuestro personal vio los desafíos y se ajustó para responder a las necesidades de los estudiantes. Esta es una de las muchas razones por las que la Escuela de Vacaciones de este año fue tan importante para ellos.
La Escuela de Vacaciones es un espacio para aplicar estrategias de aprendizaje más creativas, ofreciendo a nuestros estudiantes un lugar para aprender mientras experimentan con diferentes ideas y temas. A medida que el programa llega a su fin este año, reflexionamos sobre el 2022. Nada de estas estrategias tan significativas habría sido posible sin el apoyo de nuestra familia EFTC. Gracias por todo lo que hacen por la Escuela de la Esperanza
