Fiorella’s Story as a Volunteer
La historia de Fiorella como voluntaria
Every person who comes to School of Hope has a different story. Some come eager to learn about another culture, others looking to contribute their time and skills, and still others discover this wonderful project thanks to someone who has already had the experience. This was the case for Fiorella Cordero, a Business Administration student at Northeastern University from Costa Rica, who decided to travel to Guatemala after being inspired by Ava's story. Ava was a communications intern last year at the foundation, where she had such a wonderful and unforgettable experience that she decided to return months later with Fiorella.
Cada persona que llega a la Escuela La Esperanza tiene una historia diferente. Algunos vienen con ganas de conocer otra cultura, otros buscando aportar su tiempo y habilidades, y otros descubren este gran proyecto gracias a alguien que ya vivió la experiencia. Este fue el caso de Fiorella Cordero, una estudiante de Administración de Empresas en Northeastern University, nacida en Costa Rica, quien decidió viajar a Guatemala conmovida por el testimonio de Ava. Ava fue practicante de comunicación el año pasado en la fundación, donde vivió una experiencia tan agradable e inolvidable que decidió regresar meses después junto a Fiorella.
Although she had never visited Guatemala, Ava's story piqued her curiosity.
Aunque nunca había visitado Guatemala, la historia de Ava despertó su curiosidad.
Her friend not only told her about the organization’s impact on the community, but also about the very special bond that forms with the children at the school.
Su amiga no solo le habló del impacto de la organización en la comunidad, sino también del vínculo tan especial que se crea con los niños y niñas de la escuela.
“She spoke so highly of this place, and it immediately made me want to come. She told me how much she’d grown fond of the children, how wonderful it was to help them, and how happy they became when she helped them and spent time with them. I wanted to join her and experience this for myself.” - Fiorella
“Me habló demasiado lindo de este lugar y me encantaba. Me contó lo mucho que se encariñó con los niños, lo lindo que era ayudar y lo felices que se ponían cuando los ayudaban y compartía con ellos. Quise acompañarla y venir a vivir esta experiencia por mí misma.” - Fiorella
After taking the tour, walking through the facilities, and learning about the different programs offered to the students, one word summed up her first impression: hope.
Después de recibir el tour, recorrer las instalaciones y conocer los diferentes programas que ofrecen a los estudiantes, hubo una palabra que resumió su primera impresión: esperanza.
For Fiorella, the organization not only provides education but also creates real opportunities for children to build a different future. The scholarship program and the support families receive showed her that the impact extends far beyond the classroom.
Para Fiorella, la organización no solo brinda educación, sino que crea oportunidades reales para que los niños puedan construir un futuro diferente. El programa de becas y el acompañamiento que reciben las familias le demostraron que el impacto va mucho más allá del salón.
“I think it gives children hope. All the programs they offer after middle school, especially the Scholarship Program, and how they can change the lives of so many children. ” - Fiorella
“Creo que transmite esperanza para los niños. Todos los programas que tienen para después de básico como el programa de becados y cómo pueden cambiar la situación de muchos niños.” - Fiorella
During her first days at the School of Hope, Fiorella found a warm community where the children express their affection in many ways. She describes the experience as a time of learning and reflection. Seeing the challenges many families face was a “reality check,” but also an opportunity to help.
Durante sus primeros días en la Escuela La Esperanza, Fiorella encontró una comunidad cálida, donde los niños expresan su cariño de muchas maneras. Describe la experiencia como un momento de aprendizaje y reflexión. Ver de cerca los desafíos que enfrentan muchas familias fue un “golpe de realidad”, pero también una oportunidad para ayudar.
“Honestly, the children are so sweet. They're incredibly loving, even at such a young age. It’s been a real reality check to see everything, but I’ve truly enjoyed being part of this.” - Fiorella.
“Super lindos, la verdad, son demasiado lindos los niños y ellos tan pequeños son demasiado amorosos. La verdad ha sido un golpe de realidad ver todo pero me ha gustado ser parte de esto. “ - Fiorella.
One of the moments that moved her the most was when the students reunited with Ava, who had inspired her to travel to Guatemala and have this experience.Seeing the children run to hug Ava after months apart was a powerful reminder of the impact a volunteer can have on a child's life.
Uno de los momentos que más la conmovió ocurrió cuando los estudiantes volvieron a encontrarse con Ava, quien la motivó a viajar a Guatemala y vivir esta experiencia. Ver como los niños corren a abrazarla después de meses sin verla fue una muestra del impacto que un voluntario puede dejar en esos pequeños niños.
“I almost started crying when the children came to give Ava a big hug, they were all so sweet because they’d missed her, I think it’s so sweet.” - Fiorella.
“Casi me pongo a llorar cuando los niños llegaron a abrazar a Ava, todos tiernos porque la extrañaban, me parece súper lindo.” - Fiorella.
Hearing the testimony of someone she trusted was what convinced Fiorella to become a volunteer. Today, after experiencing it for herself, she hopes to do the same when she returns home; she wants to share her experience with her family and friends so that more people can learn about the work done by the School of Hope.
Fiorella al escuchar el testimonio de una persona de confianza fue determinante para dar el paso y convertirse en voluntaria. Hoy, después de vivir la experiencia por sí misma, espera hacer lo mismo cuando regrese a casa, desea compartir lo que vivió con su familia y amigos para que más personas conozcan el trabajo que realiza la Escuela La Esperanza.
“I want to tell them how wonderful it was, how much I loved it. And that I hope to return sometime in the future, whether alone or with Ava.” - Fiorella.
“Contarles que fue super lindo, que me encantó. Y que deseo volver en algún momento en el futuro, ya sea sola o con Ava.” - Fiorella.
Volunteering not only transforms the lives of those who receive support, but it also deeply inspires those who want to serve. For Fiorella, this experience has meant getting to know a new culture, connecting with more people, and discovering how small gestures, like a smile or a hug, can become memories that last a lifetime.
El voluntariado no solo transforma la vida de quienes reciben apoyo, también inspira profundamente a quienes quieren servir. Para Fiorella, esta experiencia ha significado conocer una nueva cultura, conectar con más personas y descubrir cómo pequeños gestos, como una sonrisa o un abrazo, pueden convertirse en recuerdos que permanecen para siempre.
Every volunteer arrives with different skills and experiences, but they all share the same purpose: to help create opportunities for the children at the School of Hope. And, more often, they end up taking away much more than they ever imagined they would find.
Cada voluntario llega con habilidades y experiencias diferentes, pero todos comparten un mismo propósito, contribuir a construir oportunidades para los niños de la Escuela la Esperanza. Y, muchas veces, terminan llevándose mucho más de lo que imaginaban encontrar.
