Connecting Guatemala and the UK: An Entrepreneurship Workshop with Jennyfer Mejia from Latina Rising 🇬🇹🤝🚀

Conectando Guatemala y el Reino Unido: Un taller de Emprendimiento con Jennyfer Mejia de Latina Rising 🇬🇹🤝🚀

In the last week of April, we had the privilege of having the participation of Jennyfer Mejia, founder and director of Latina Rising, a project focused on generating valuable content focused on entrepreneurship. Latina Rising aims to support Latin American entrepreneurs in the UK through networking, resources and visibility.

Jennyfer is deeply committed to the Latino community in the UK. Through her digital platforms such as Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn she shares resources, tips and guides that allow many people take their first steps into entrepreneurship. She also seeks to inspire women who have not yet started their entrepreneur journey, by sharing her own experience and those of other Latinas living in the UK.

When we spoke to Jenn about the possibility of sharing her knowledge with the young people at the School of Hope in Guatemala, she didn't hesitate for a second. With great enthusiasm, we started working together to organise a workshop with our ninth graders.

En la ultima semana de abril, tuvimos el privilegio de contar con la participación de Jennyfer Mejia, fundadora y directora de Latina Rising, un proyecto enfocado en generar contenido de valor enfocado en el emprendimiento. Latina Rising busca impulsar a los emprendedores latinoamericanos en el Reino Unido a través del networking, recursos y visibilidad.

Jennyfer está muy comprometida con la comunidad latina en el Reino Unido. En sus canales digitales como Instagram, TikTok y LinkedIn comparte recursos, tips y guías que permiten a muchas personas dar sus primeros pasos hacia el emprendimiento. También busca inspirar con su experiencia y la de otras mujeres latinas viviendo en el Reino Unido, a aquellas mujeres que aún no se han atrevido a dar los primeros pasos para desarrollar su emprendimiento.

Cuando conversamos con Jenn sobre la posibilidad de compartir sus conocimientos con los jovenes en la Escuela La Esperanza en Guatemala, no lo dudo ni un segundo. Y con mucho entusiasmo empezamos a trabajar en conjunto para organizar un taller con nuestros alumnos de noveno grado.

Thanks to technology we were able to connect the ninth grade classrooms in Jocotenango with Jenn who was in London. The workshop started at 9:30 am Guatemala time. Jenn began by sharing her personal story, from her first ventures in Spain to her current work as founder of Latina Rising.

Using clear and simple language, she spoke about the importance of finding a passion and turning it into an entrepreneurial venture. Our young students shared brilliant ideas, from leveraging their passion for music by making remixes on Youtube or opening a Karaoke, to opening a small business inspired by one of their hobbies such as jewellery. Jenn then continued by explaining the steps to entrepreneurship: the idea, the validation, the resources and the launch.

Gracias a la tecnología logramos conectar las aulas de noveno grado en Jocotenango con Jenn quien estaba en Londres. El taller empezó a las 9:30 am hora de Guatemala. Jenn inició compartiendo su historia personal, desde sus primeros emprendimientos en España hasta su actual labor como fundadora de Latina Rising.

Con un lenguaje claro y sencillo, habló como la importancia de encontrar una pasión y convertirla en un emprendimiento. Nuestros jovenes estudiantes compartieron ideas brillantes, desde aprovechar su pasión por la musica haciendo remixes en Youtube o abriendo un Karaoke, hasta abrir un pequeño negocio inspirado en uno de sus hobbies como la bisutería. Luego Jenn continuó explicando los pasos para emprender: la idea, la validación, los recursos y el lanzamiento.

This workshop also reviewed in depth the Business Model Canvas and how to use it to structure a business. The students listened attentively, took notes and spent a few minutes working on their own projects. While they were working, Jenn provided practical advice on how to make a product unique and different, as well as the importance of deeply understanding the customer. Finally, to close the workshop one of the students shared his work and the Canvas model he had prepared for his idea of opening a garage.

Este workshop también reviso a profundidad el modelo Canvas y cómo usarlo para estructurar un negocio. Los alumnos escuchaban con atención, tomaban notas y dedicaron unos minutos a trabajar en sus propios proyectos. Mientras ellos trabajaban Jenn se encargó de dar consejos prácticos de como volver un producto único y diferente así como la importancia de conocer a profundidad al cliente. Finalmente, para cerrar el taller uno de los alumnos compartió su trabajo y el modelo Canvas que había preparado sobre su idea de abrir un taller mecánico. 

Today we would like to take a moment to deeply thank Jenn for giving us her time, energy and knowledge. Thank you for connecting the UK with Guatemala, this meeting is a way to show that entrepreneurship has no borders when there is a willingness to share and help others to develop their skills. We are sure that our young students will take your steps as an example. Thank you for inspiring our students to dream big and believe in their potential. You are a powerful example of how entrepreneurship can help them achieve all their goals and transform their future.

Gracias por conectar el Reino Unido con Guatemala, este encuentro es una forma de demostrar que el emprendimiento no tiene fronteras cuando existe la voluntad de compartir y ayudar a otros a desarrollarse. Estamos seguros que nuestros jovenes tomaran tus pasos como ejemplo. Gracias por inspirar a nuestros estudiantes a soñar en grande y creer en su potencial. Eres un ejemplo poderoso de como el emprendimiento puede ayudarles a cumplir  todas sus metas y transformar su futuro.
