Height, Weight, and Healthy Futures 📊🧡

At La Esperanza School, we care deeply about the health and wellbeing of our students. At the start of each year, we begin with a height‑and‑weight day, allowing us to gather essential information that is continuously monitored by our school nurse.

Unfortunately, Guatemala has the highest rate of child malnutrition in Latin America, and ranks sixth globally. (ODHAG 2025). One in every two children under five suffers from chronic malnutrition. It is a silent condition that limits their growth, learning, and long-term wellbeing. Many of our pupils may not have three meals a day at home, so the healthy food they receive at school plays a vital role in supporting their development. That is why every day we provide one snack and one lunch to ensure proper nutrition for all pupils from Kindergarten through Third Year of Basic Education. We believe every child deserves to begin their day with the strength and energy they need to learn and thrive. A full stomach gives them the energy to learn, to participate, and to imagine a brighter future.

Our Prepa pupils had their first height‑and‑weight session this term, an important step in supporting their early learning and development. hese measurements are far more than numbers on a chart — they help us understand how our pupils are growing, how their bodies are responding to improved nutrition, and where additional support may be needed. By monitoring their progress throughout the year, we can see the real, tangible impact that daily healthy meals have on their wellbeing, ensuring every child has the chance to grow stronger, healthier, and ready to learn.
