Vittorio’s Journey on “El Camino de Santiago” 🥾💛🌍
In this short interview, we will get to know our incredible Amigo and Volunteer, Vittorio who is walking the legendary “El Camino de Santiago” to raise vital funds for The School Of Hope. We will hear about his time volunteering in Jocotenango, including a small but meaningful gift he carries with him everyday, an object with a beautiful story behind it. We will also explore what inspired him him to take on this challenge, how he prepared for such a demanding journey and the moments and surprises that have shaped his experience along the way
Let’s hear directly from Vittorio as he reflects on where it all started.
When did you first come across Escuela La Esperanza? Tell us how you found EFTC.
V: About ten years ago I was made redundant, and while looking for my next job I also searched some opportunities to volunteer. I got in contact with EFTC in Nottingham, they were looking for someone who could help them with a piece of software I know. I started soon a new position and so could not support them at the time, but was greatly impressed by the school and started supporting financially.
Here we are, ten years later!
What motivated you to travel to Guatemala to volunteer?
V: I retired end of last year, and so was thinking about what to do with my time. Right then I received an email from EFTC mentioning that opportunity, and I thought it was perfect! I’ve been volunteering long years, serving on ambulances with the Red Cross in Italy and much more. I always say that volunteering in the most selfish thing I can do, as it gives me so much in terms of personal satisfaction. It makes me feel good.
What memories or lessons do you carry with you from your time at the School of Hope?
V: I could write books on that. The daily contact with the kids is absolutely amazing. Will never forget the girl who, after I helped her with some exercise, during the following break took a flower and gave it to me with an unbelievable smile. That flower is right here, with me, and will always be.
What inspired you to walk the Camino de Santiago as part of your fundraising campaign?
V: This is a prolonged effort, day after day, walking step by step. Very much like studying for a better future. Not a time limited effort, something that goes on and on and on.
How did you prepare yourself physically and mentally for this journey?
V: I made some long walk, including a Market Harborough - Leicester walk along a canal, 30 km approx., with the backpack I have now with me. I am quite active, nearly every morning hit the gym and try to keep fit.
What kept you going during the most difficult moments? Has there been any moment along the route that stayed with you?
V: Difficult moments happen, no surprise. I know it, the point in my opinion is acknowledge you can use an extra break, or maybe stop few kilometres short of your goal. I am no iron man, no doubts about it. Never try to exceed your limits. Push them, but respect them too.
Do you have any funny, unexpected, or memorable anecdotes during your journey you’d like to share with the EFTC audience?
V: So many little things happen everyday! I am often asked whether I am a teacher, given my t-shirts! Maybe the nicest moment was in Povoa de Varzim, after a long long day. When I am in an Albergue with a kitchen to be used by pilgrims, I usually go around saying that I am Italian, and will be glad to cook spaghetti for dinner for everyone. In a minute, someone volunteers to prepare a salad, someone to bring an ice cream, someone to take wine or beer, someone on a stricter budget will to the dishes, and a bunch of complete strangers becomes a group of friends. Amazing.
Why did you decide to dedicate this challenge to support the school of hope?
V: I loved every minute there, every kid I met, everything I did. You are doing something amazing and deserve all the support I can offer.
What message would you like to share with those who are considering making a donation?
V: Giving up a coffee a day can change a life. It is worth it. Look in the eyes of those kids few seconds and you will understand they deserve an opportunity.
What impact do you hope this fundraising effort will have on the school community?
V: I am well aware it’s a drop in the sea, but drop after drop after drop….
Would you like to repeat this experience in the future?
V: If it reaches good results, absolutely!
